The IBM System/360 - 1964

The IBM System/360 of 1964 was, as IBM president Thomas J. Watson, Jr., said at the time, "the most significant product announcement in IBM history." It was the industry's first major "family" of compatible computers. Its processors, ranging from small to large, could use most of the same peripheral equipment and programs, making it easier for the user to move up to greater computing power. Seen in this "fisheye" view is a System/360 Model 40 processor with control panel, a string of eight IBM 2401 magnetic tape units and controller, and three IBM 2311 magnetic disk storage drives.
