It's 9:35 a.m. on February 3, 1930, and E. E. Ford, vice president of IBM's International Time Recorder (ITR) Division is welcoming 66 students to IBM Sales School 55 -- the largest to date -- in the company's factory in Endicott, N.Y. During the coming month, the students will be taught the principles and operation of various ITR equipment and products, including master clocks -- the topic of today's instruction. Among the slogans displayed around the classroom are: "Time is Money," "Plan Your Work and Work Your Plan," and "Time is Your Chief Stock in Trade." We can only speculate on why some of the men in the last row have elected to sit on cloths; perhaps they already are anticipating the effects of spending the next four weeks sitting on those hard chairs.
