During World War II, IBM's president, Thomas J. Watson, Sr., placed his company's manufacturing facilities at the disposal of the U.S. government to assist with the war effort. IBM's manufacturing space was expanded with new facilities in Endicott and Poughkeepsie, N.Y., while the number of plant employees tripled during the early 1940s. Here workers at the new Poughkeepsie plant are hard at work in 1940 to -- as the banner on the back wall exhorts -- "keep 'em flying!" (VV2021)
