| The IBM 701 system of 1952 was one
of the first computers to use magnetic tape for
reading, writing and storing information. Recording
at 100 characters per second, this 8-inch-diameter
reel was equivalent to 12,500 punched cards. The
701's tape units contained a new vacuum column and
magnetic clutch tape drive system and were among
the first to use plastic rather than magnetic tape. |
