| Dramatic changes in size -- half
the floor space -- and capability are vividly seen
in this view of design models for the IBM 3420 Magnetic
Tape Subsystem of 1970 (background) and the newer
IBM 3480 (Model B22) of 1984 (foreground). The 3420
used 10.5-inch round tape reels that stored 160MB
of data; the 3480 used a 5.5-inch square cartridge
that stored up to 200MB of data. |
