The IBM 2321 Data Cell Drive was a random access device that could store up to 400 million alphanumeric characters or up to 800 million decimal digits on magnetic strips mounted vertically around a rotating cylinder. Announced in 1964, the 2321 could be linked in multiple drives to the IBM System/360 to provide a storage capacity of 3.2 billion characters of information.
