The ASCC at Harvard
Used by the Navy during the war to run repetitive
calculations for the production of mathematical tables,
the Mark I operated at Harvard for 15 years while assisting
in the solution of complex problems in various disciplines.
Ultimately, a portion of the machine was sent to the
Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., while Harvard
retained a section as an exhibit. Some of the ASCC's
electromechanical counters are preserved today in IBM's
collection of historical computing devices.
Be sure to visit the ASCC
Reference room for additional information on, and
views of, this remarkable machine.
