The following are excerpts from the IBM Sales
Manual.
The System/390 Parallel Enterprise Server general purpose models are a continuation of the Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) product family. These processors can participate in business computing in a standalone environment and are the building blocks for a Parallel Sysplex. These models in a Parallel Sysplex configuration enable single image growth well beyond single processor solutions.
The S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server - Generation 4 models are a cost- effective replacement for bipolar and comparable non-IBM processors. These models offer high capacity processors with larger memory capabilities. Upgrades from the existing S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server R2, R3, and R4 models to the S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server - Generation 4 models are available. The S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server - Generation 4 models can be full participants in a Parallel Sysplex configuration, along with S/390 software and professional services. This enhanced Parallel Sysplex configuration extends the single image CMOS processing capabilities significantly.

- Fourteen air-cooled S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server - Generation 4 models
- A S/390 Coupling Facility model
- Field installable upgrade paths from most 9672 and 9674 models
- Up to 16GB processor storage capability
- Cryptographic Coprocessor as a standard feature
- Enhanced Coupling Links for increased performance in a Parallel Sysplex environment
- Internal Coupling Facility feature enabling a lower point of entry into Parallel Sysplex
- Enhanced availability functions
- Further potential reductions in the cost of computing
IBM leads the industry by offering the following enhancements:
- Processor storage capability of 16GBs on Generation 4 and C05 models.
- Cryptographic Coprocessor as a standard feature on the Generation 4 models, providing industry-leading hardware supported encryption performance and security.
- New High Performance Coupling Links (HiPerLinks) which may provide improved response times in processing coupling facility channel efficiency and response times in processing coupling facility requests. This offering is available for S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server - Generation 3 and Generation 4 servers, and S/390 Coupling Facility C04 and C05 models.
- Innovative cooling techniques introduced with the Generation 4 model RY5 to provide customers with the fastest S/390 CMOS technology world- wide.
- New Internal Coupling Facility as an optional feature for all S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server - Generation 3 and 4 models, except 10-way systems, which allows a PU to be configured to function as a coupling facility without increasing software licensing costs.
- Standard functional enhancements, including Concurrent CP Sparing, Dynamic Coupling Facility Dispatching, and 15 LPARs, on the Generation 3 and Generation 4 models.
The S/390 G4 Enterprise Server models continue to enable significant savings with respect to energy, facilities overhead, and maintenance costs when compared to older technology processors. Customers who migrate from an ES/9000 system, or comparable non-IBM systems, can see up to 97% savings in energy costs (including power and cooling), up to 65% in service and maintenance costs, and more than 91% in floor space requirements. Less energy requirement leads to economies in facilities infrastructure and operating cost. Lower energy needs may defer machine room expansion,
electrical power distribution retrofit, and reduce site heat exchanger (HVAC) burden. The exclusive universal power capabilities of IBM's new servers accommodate direct attachment to any electrical utility worldwide. IBM's G4 model RY5 exploits innovative cooling techniques and provides customers with the fastest S/390 CMOS technology worldwide. The air-cooled RY5 incorporates a Modular Cooling Unit (MCU) internal to its footprint, to achieve faster cycle time and higher performance compared to the RX5. The MCU has an N + 1 design with concurrent maintenance capability.
Increased Processor Storage Capability to 16GBs: IBM leads the industry by offering up to 16GBs of processor storage capability on the new S/390 G4 Servers and Coupling Facility C05 model. This enhances the ability to balance S/390 G4 system resources with the performance of the processor. In PR/SM LPAR mode, models with greater than 2GBs installed storage can configure some or all of the installed storage as central storage. Each individual logical partition is limited to a maximum of 2GBs of central storage. The sum total of all logical partition central storage can exceed 2GBs up to the limit of processor storage.
Performance Comparisons: The following table provides the performance expectations of the new S/390 G4 Enterprise Server models, relative to the 9672 model R15 (where the R15 is approximately 0.9 to 1.1 times the performance of an ES/9000 model 711).

Note: (1) The above performance comparisons are Internal Throughput Rate Ratios (ITRR) based on measurements and projections using standard IBM benchmarks in a controlled environment. The actual throughput that any user will experience will vary depending upon considerations such as the amount of multiprogramming in the user's job stream, the I/O configuration, and the workload processed. Therefore, no assurance can be given that an individual user will achieve throughput improvements equivalent to the performance ratios stated here. For more detailed performance information, please consult the Large System Performance Reference (LSPR). The values represent the ITRR relative to the 9672 Model R15, where the 9672 R15 is approximately 0.9 to 1.1 times the performance of an ES/9000 Model 711.
