Magnetic tape was the usual means by which data were entered into the 705, as evidenced by this view of the system's several IBM 727 Magnetic Tape Units on either side of the 705 operator's console. Up to 5 million characters -- or the equivalent of 25,000-to-50,000 punched cards -- could be stored on a single reel of magnetic tape.
