
Gil Jones was the chairman of the board of the IBM
World Trade Corporation, a member of the Corporate Office
of IBM and vice chairman of the IBM Board of directors.
The following is the text of a corporate biography
published in June 1986.

Gilbert E. Jones is a member of the IBM advisory board.
Mr. Jones was born on January 8, 1917 in Convent, New
Jersey and was graduated from Harvard University in
1938 with an A.B. Degree and then joined International
Business Machines Corporation, serving as a sales representative
until 1942, when he joined the U.S. Navy. In 1945 he
was discharged as a Lieutenant Senior Grade and shortly
thereafter rejoined IBM.
In 1953 Mr. Jones was named executive assistant to
the president of IBM, and in 1956 was promoted to sales
manager of the domestic company. In 1959 he became president
of the Data Processing Division.
Late in 1961 Mr. Jones joined IBM World Trade Corporation
and was elected vice president. In 1962 he was elected
executive vice president and a member of the board of
directors and the executive committee of the IBM World
Trade Corporation. In October 1963, Mr. Jones was elected
president of IBM World Trade Corporation and a vice
president and group executive of International Business
Machines Corporation. He was elected a senior vice president
and a member of the former Management Committee in October
1967. Mr. Jones served as chairman of the Management
Committee from August 1969 to November 1970. He was
elected to the board of directors of International Business
Machines Corporation in January 1970.
In April 1970, Mr. Jones was elected chairman of the
board of IBM World Trade Corporation and chairman of
the Executive Committee. In January 1973, Mr. Jones
was elected a member of the Corporate Office of IBM,
along with Mr. [Frank T.] Cary and Mr. [Thomas J.] Watson,
Jr., and he also became chairman of the Management Committee.
He was elected vice chairman of the IBM board in February
1974 and became a member of the current Corporate Management
Committee. Mr. Jones retired as an employee and officer
of IBM on January 31, 1977. He continues as a director
of IBM World Trade Europe/Middle East/Africa Corporation,
a post to which he was elected in March 1974. Mr. Jones
was made a member of the IBM advisory board in February
1977.
Mr. Jones is a director of E. I. du Pont de Nemours
Company and. the General Reinsurance Company.
Mr. and Mrs. Jones have four children.
