Leonardo's Paddlewheel Ship
 
Leonardo da Vinci designed a vessel to be propelled by turning the wheels through cranks and gears by manpower. The paddlewheel was not successfully applied to the propulsion of ships until the 19th century, when the invention of the steam engine finally made it possible to supply sufficient power to drive the wheels.
