This early 19th century English device is engraved with numerous scales on both sides, and was used for measuring both the outside diameters of cannon balls and the inside bore diameters of cannons, with direct readouts in inches, angle, shot, cannon, and gauges. Engraved tables gave proof and service charges as a function of size for brass guns, iron guns, brass howitzers and brass mortars. |
