Leonardo's Drum

Leonardo da Vinci was an accomplished musician and he sketched ideas for a variety of musical instruments. Some of them could have been artistic instruments but in most, as in this drum, he conceived ways of mechanizing a player's performance. As this device is wheeled along the ground, the gear fixed to the axle turns two cylinders, which trip five spring-powered drumsticks on each side of the drum. In the same manner as a music box, the placement of the pegs in the cylinders determines the order and rhythm of the drumbeats.
