This RAMAC 650 computer at the U.S. Federal Aviation Agency's Indianapolis air route traffic control center in November 1959 automatically processed flight data and printed the thousands of flight progress strips used daily by the center's air traffic controllers in monitoring flight routes and directing pilots. A six million digit reservoir of air traffic information contained in the system's magnetic disk storage unit (center) was constantly updated for processing and reference by controllers. When the controllers wished to check on the data in storage, the IBM 838 Inquiry Station (foreground) instantly furnished a printed copy of the desired facts.
