Hamid Pirahesh wins the ICDE 2006 Influential Paper Award

Hamid Pirahesh IBM Academy of Technology member and IBM Fellow, Hamid Pirahesh, won the International Conference on Data Engineering (ICDE) 2006 Influential Paper Award for their ICDE 1996 paper, "Data Cube: A Relational Aggregation Operator Generalizing Group-By, Cross-Tab and Sub-Total."

The paper defined extensions to relational databases that enable efficient OLAP (On-Line Analytic Processing) cubes over relational data in a single query, where previous approaches required multiple queries. This is now incorporated in all major database systems.

Pirahesh collaborated with Adam Bosworth, Jim Gray and Andrew Layman on the paper.
