The University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana College of Engineering recently presented Joan Mitchell, IBM Fellow, with its Alumni Award for Distinguished Service.
One of five Illinois alumni to receive the award this year, Joan was recognized "for changing the way the world is viewed through the development of novel compression methods for image data, allowing for more efficient processing, storage, and distribution."
Joan was also an honored guest of the university's Physics Department for the department's award luncheon. She also spent a week on campus mentoring students.
"I was honored to join the distinguished company of past winners of this award," says Joan. "I'm very pleased that they noticed the work I have done."
