Don Chamberlin Elected IEEE Fellow

Don Chamberlin The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) recently elected Don Chamberlin as an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to database query languages. Chamberlin is an IBM Academy of Technology member and an IBM Fellow. He works in computer science at IBM's Almaden Research Center.

Each year, following a rigorous evaluation procedure, the IEEE Fellow Committee recommends a select group of recipients for IEEE Fellow, one of the Institute's most prestigious honors.

Chamberlin's main research focus is on database languages and systems, and document processing. He is the principal editor of the language specifications for the W3C standards XQuery and XPath, and co-author of the language proposal on which XQuery is based. And, he is part of the research and development team for IBM's DB2 family of database products and a key participant in the design of SQL and XQuery.

For the past several years, Chamberlin has served as a judge and problem contributor in the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest. This is an IBM-sponsored contest in which top student programmers from around the word are given the opportunity to develop critical skills that will give them a competitive edge as they launch careers in information technology. They're exposed to Java, Linux, Eclipse and other open computing platforms that drive innovation in industries worldwide.

Chamberlin is also an ACM Fellow and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
