Your old PCs aren't like a fine wine or a vintage car. Their value will never go up, and will eventually dwindle to zero. For example, look at what's happened to resale prices on these systems in less than a year:
| |
System description |
May 2006 |
Jan 2007 |
|
|
|
|
| |
Dell Notebook P2000 |
$323 |
$213 (-34%) |
| |
IBM Thinkpad P1000 |
$176 |
$150 (-15%) |
| |
Compaq Desktop P1130 |
$ 35 |
$ 17 (-51%)

(These prices are based on IBM's internal PC residual value tables that are updated monthly)
Simply storing retired PCs as they devaluate will only cost you money. And the longer you wait, the greater the odds that they will eventually have no resale value at all, and will not even be wanted as donations.
At that point, disposal will be your only option. And disposal is your last surprise, because the cost of properly disposing of a system is typically more than you would receive from selling it.*
The best move is to sell those used systems as soon as you are finished using them.
IBM Asset Recovery Solutions, a service of IBM Global Financing, can help you sell used IBM and non-IBM PCs on the secondary market while there's still time! And even if it's too late to sell them, we can help you dispose of those assets in accordance with applicable state and federal environmental laws and regulations. We can even perform data overwriting on your hard drives.
* This is based on a total cost of PC ownership survey which identifies a price of approximately $100 to dispose of a PC. O'Brien Francis, (2003) "PC Disposal: TCO's Last Surprise": Gartner Research, Inc. DF-20-4138, (September) 1-6
