Is this a service I should offer to perform for my clients, or should I just tell them about it and let them handle it themselves?

You might choose to assist your clients in this process as a value-added service you offer them, or you might prefer simply to tell them about it and give them a copy of the IBM Asset Recovery Solutions eFlyer. (If your browser does not read .pdf files, Adobe® Acrobat® is free to download and use.) Remember that helping your clients dispose of their retired assets is a natural extension of the equipment sales process. They'll appreciate the help!

And don't forget that you are also eligible to take advantage of these services for your own company!

What kind of equipment is eligible?

IBM can dispose of most IT equipment commonly in service in small and medium-sized businesses. This includes:

  • Servers
  • Notebooks
  • Desktops
  • Laser Printers
  • Monitors

What do clients do about data on their hard drives?

The client is responsible for removal of all company data prior to return of an asset to IBM. However, we do offer an optional disk sanitization and cleansing service that overwrites their data. Hard-file data is cleansed via a 3x overwrite process so that data is virtually irretrievable. This option meets Department of Defense 5220-22-m 3-pass standards. All nonfunctional or non-marketable hard drives are "hammer destroyed".

How does the client ship their assets to IBM?

IBM Asset Recovery Solutions offers services that include packing instructions, pickup at your location or your client's location, and shipping to our designated location.

What does it cost?

If your assets are remarketable, this service pays you or your client for your equipment. There is a charge for transportation, which is approximately $25 per item. If you are returning more than five (5) systems, there is a price break on the transportation charge.

If the assets are not remarketable, the cost is approximately $30 per item (desktops, notebooks, printers and servers under 60 pounds). Monitors and servers 60 pounds and over are priced slightly higher. A minimum of 10 systems is required.

Either way, the client will receive a quote directly from IBM prior to commitment.

How long is a buyback quote good for?

It's good for 30 days from the date the client receives a quote for the assets.

When will I or the client receive a check?

Once we receive the equipment, we inspect it to ensure that the equipment is identical to what was described through the online tool, and cut a check within 30 days.

What happens if a system has no marketable value?

IBM Asset Recovery Solutions provides an environmentally safe disposal option for assets without market value in accordance with EPA guidelines and United States federal, state and local laws.
