When Cate Colburn-Smith returned to work shortly after becoming a mother, her emotions were so strong, she was compelled to write them down. As a result, she's published her first book - The Milk Memos - which went on sale nationwide (online and bookstores) Thursday, March 14.

Written with fellow IBMer Andrea Serrette, the book is a guide to working motherhood, based on actual journals kept by a group of IBM women during their visits to an employee lactation room at IBM Boulder. The book, both poignant and hilarious, shows women how it is possible to literally nurture both family and career.
Here's an excerpt of the book's review from former IBMer Ted Childs:
"The intersection of real life and real work. For working mothers, it should make them realize how powerful the bond of networking is. For our business leaders, it provides another clarifying example of what constitutes sincere, believable and effective senior executive behavior. Such behavior sends credible messages to women that they are valued members of our workforce, and that their life experiences must, with respect, be taken into consideration when managing our talent base, and that it is understood that old culture rules have no place in managing today's workforce."

For some authors, it's a dream come true, and that was the case with the latest IBM Press author, Sandy Carter. She recently noted after publishing her first book, The New Language of Business, The: SOA & Web 2.0, that seeing her book online was a 'dream come true.' It was also a challenge as Sandy is a vice president for IBM's Service-Oriented Architecture, WebSphere Marketing, Strategy and Channels.

Authors who write a book under the IBM Press imprint do so on their own time, giving up nights and weekends, but as Sandy realized, the end results are well worth the effort.
IBM Press is a great vehicle for IBM employees, clients, business partners and other industry watchers to collaborate and learn new trends and directions. It's a vehicle for sharing IBM's expertise on a broad basis. To learn more about IBM Press and order books, visit www.ibm.com/ibmpress.
