What made you decide to work for IBM?

The first time I saw an IBM computer I was 13. It was an IBM PS/2 model and it was built with 8 MHz 80868086. I used to spend hours programming in the Basic language. My dream was to work at IBM.

What is your biggest accomplishment at IBM?

My biggest accomplishment has been becoming a Master inventor. IBM believed in my ideas and considered them innovative. The company paid to get them patented and I became a Master Inventor. I think that to be a computer scientist you have to be creative and innovative. I consider a computer scientist as a "modern artist" who uses his computer as his canvas, the keyboard as a paintbrush and the programming languages as colors.

Has IBM opened the doors to any new experiences for you?

Yes, definitely and it is still the same.

What makes you proud to be an IBMer?

I take great pride in being a IBMer and the fact that we are truly making a difference to the world through the innovation and technology that we deliver to our clients. The rich heritage of a 100 years of transformational culture driven by strong values inspires me to give my best everyday.

Has IBM provided you with any unique work-life integration solutions?

I would consider IBM as the most flexible organization where I have had the opportunity to move from being a regular office goer to a completely work from home employee. Now, I travel to IBM offices only when I have face to face classes and the rest of the time I am able to manage work and my personal life from home or any other location. As long as work is delivered to the standards we want, it does not matter where you are! This flexibility in my role is priceless.

How has working in a global society impacted your career?

It has made me collaborative, appreciative of cultural differences and demonstrate inclusive leadership. It offers opportunities like no other to experience diverse cultures and helps leap frog one into becoming a global citizen.

Has IBM opened the doors to any new experiences for you?

At the time I joined IBM, I had never been on an airplane! So as I advanced in my career, I soon found myself in a management role coordinating distribution activity throughout the East coast The people I met and the concepts I learned not only opened doors but introduced me to new perspectives. Remember that this was at a time when a woman manager was the exception, and I enjoyed being somewhat of a pioneer.

What advice would you give to our new IBMers?

First and foremost, develop your skills, and then keep an open mind. This is a wonderful company, that encourages excellence and rewards performance. If you work hard and with integrity, there will be many opportunities. It's good to have a career plan, but also be flexible and don't be afraid to take a risk and try something new. With a company this size, you can go almost any direction and stay energized.

How has working in a global society impacted your career?

I love working in a global role, and think it's amazing that with technology I feel like I "work closely" with fellow IBMers everywhere! Now with so many options (virtual offices, communities, conference calls, sametime, e-mail, smart cloud meetings, webcasts, etc.), I can honestly say I have "teammates" all over the world. The impact of a global society to my career has been the rewards in getting to know and collaborate with IBMers from many different geographies and cultures to accomplish common goals.
