Test 917: System Administration for IBM Informix Dynamic Server V10


Overview Objectives Test Preparation

The test contains eight sections totalling approximately 73 multiple-choice questions.  The percentages after each section title reflect the approximate distribution of the total question set across the sections.

Section 1 - Database Physical System Design (8%)


Determine appropriate commection types
Determine appropriate communication protocols
Plan for Distributed System capabilities
Describe product limitations as it applies to the sytem planning process
Determine the number and size of logical and physical logs to accommodate transaction activity
Determine when an instance can/should use AIO or KAIO

Section 2 - Installation and Configuration (13%)


Install IBM Informix Dynamic Server (IDS) 10.x product files
Configure the Operating System parameters
Set up Operating System fiesl and sqlhosts file
Configure IDS onconfig parameters and environment variables
Start the database server and initialize disk spce, if necessary
Edit connectivity files to establish Client/Server communications
Edit appropriate onconfig parameters and invironment variables

Section 3 - System Activity Monitoring (14%)


Use the onstat utility to monitor system activities
Query Sysmaster (SMI) database to obtain system activity snapshot
Set up system alarm programs
Monitor the message log file for abnormal activity
Use the oncheck command to view information about the database server
Use the onlog utility to monitor logical log records

Section 4 - Troubleshooting (14%)


Query the sysmaster database to isolate problems
Use the onstat utility to isolate problems
Use the oncheck utility to verify data consistency
Use the onmonitor utility to verify object properties
Monitor the message logs for errors
Use the Informxi Server Administrator utility to verify and monitor instance object properties

Section 5 - Performance Tuning (22%)


Establish Performance Benchmarks to gauge normal system activity
Recognize Operating System resources affecting system operations
Configure shared memory parameters for optimal performance
Determine optimal disk layout and configuration
Monitor and tune virtual processors for maximum performance
Utilize Parallel Database Query (PDQ) to optimize query performance
Use UPDATE STATISTICS to achive optimal performance
Configure system for optimal checkpoint duration
Configure Physical Log and Logical Logs for optimal system performance
Configure the number of Virtual Processors needed for the resources available
Configure network parameters for optimal communication performance

Section 6 - dbspace Configuration (11%)


Configure and manage dbspaces and sbspaces
Configure and manage chunks
Establish mirroring of dbspaces
Use the appropriate utilities to monitor dbspace properties
Prepare cooked files and raw devices for use as dbspace chunks

Section 7 - Database Server Operations (8%)


Recognize fast recovery operations
Manage database server operating modes
Manage temporary tables and files
Prepare for Installation and use of user defined routines
Monitor and maintain the iDS shared memory features and functionality

Section 8 - Backup and Restore (10%)


Select the appropriate backup and restore strategy for a particular situation
Select the appropriate backu and restore utilities
Perform backup and restore operations
Use redirected restores and point in time table resources
