Course title:
DB2 for z/OS System Performance and
Tuning
Course duration: 4.0 days
Course number: CF881
Abstract: Learn how to monitor and tune DB2 UDB for z/OS from a
system programmer point of view. Begin with some background on address spaces,
Central Processing Unit (CPU) considerations, and threads. Continue with
descriptions of the DB2 Instrumentation Facility module, DB2 workloads, and how
different types of processing are reflected on the basic reports. Also, explore
available operating system tuning opportunities plus monitoring techniques to
allow tuning of DB2's locking mechanism and DB2 attachments. Conclude with a
discussion of tuning issues involved with running DB2 utilities and the overall
management of DB2 performance. This course is complementary to DB2 UDB
for z/OS System Performance Analysis (CG881). The overlap is minimal, because
CF881 is designed to explain how to monitor and tune DB2 for z/OS from a system
programmer point of view. CG881 is designed to explain how to exploit the
current hardware and software (Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID)-5
disks with total cache size larger than the total DB2 database buffer pool,
several gigabytes of central storage, processor speed more than 100 MIPS, and
Workload Manager (WLM) goal mode) to maximize DB2 system performance with a
minimum impact on the z/OS system. You may want to take CG881 as a follow-on
to CF881. Course Materials The course materials cover DB2 UDB for
z/OS, Version 8. Paper Labs Several extensive case-study based
paper exercises are provided to develop skills in the techniques presented in
the lectures Training Path This course is part of an IBM Training
Path. Taking this course in the recommended sequence allows you to maximize the
benefits from your education. http://www.ibm.com/services/learning/ites.wss/us/en?pageType=pag
e&contentID=a0000365
This is an advanced course for Information Technology (IT) individuals, who
tune DB2 systems in the z/OS environments.

Course title:
DB2 UDB for z/OS System Performance
Analysis
Course duration: 3.5 days
Course number: CG881
Abstract: Learn about DB2 Universal Database (UDB) for z/OS
system performance issues while focusing on the latest software and hardware
with an emphasis on top-down analysis of the total response time. Learn
how to understand the effect of hardware capacity and load on response time in
order to identify existing and potential system bottlenecks. Learn how to
propose methods to use for long-term monitoring of a transaction profile and
identifying the components of response time. All system performance analysis
done in class is top-down starting from a measured response time.
Participate in several case study-based exercises to practice the
analysis techniques presented in the lecture material. These realistic and
non-trivial exercises are based on performance reports from medium-sized and
large production systems with a current environment. This course is
complementary to DB2 for z/OS Performance Tuning (CF881). The overlap is
minimal, because CG881 is designed for current hardware and software (Redundant
Array of Independent Disks (RAID)-5 disks with total cache size larger than the
total DB2 database buffer pool, several gigabytes of central storage, processor
speed more than 100 MIPS, and Workload Manager (WLM) goal mode). Hardware with
64 bits is discussed but not assumed. Because of the different focus of the two
courses, you may want to take CG881 as a follow-on to CF881. Course
Materials The course materials cover DB2 UDB for z/OS, Version 8.
Paper Labs Several extensive case-study based paper exercises are
provided to develop skills in the techniques presented in the lectures.

system administrators, and database administrators who monitor or tune DB2
systems.

DB2 UDB for z/OS Version 8: Everything You Ever Wanted to
Know, ... and More
Publication number: SG24-6079-00
IBM DATABASE 2 Universal Database Server for z/OS Version 8
is the twelfth and largest release of DB2 for MVS. It brings new synergy with
the zSeries hardware and is the first major subsystem to exploit the z/OS
64-bit virtual addressing capabilities. DB2 V8 offers data support, application
development, and query functionality enhancements for e-business, while
building upon the traditional characteristics of availability, exceptional
scalability, and performance for the enterprise of choice.
DB2 Version 8 has been re-engineered for e-business, with many fundamental
changes in architecture and structure. Key improvements enhance scalability,
application porting, security, and continuous availability. Management for very
large databases is made much easier, while 64-bit virtual storage support makes
management simpler and improves scalability and availability. This new version
breaks through many old limitations in the definition of DB2 objects, including
SQL improvements, schema evolution, longer names for tables and columns, longer
SQL statements, enhanced Java and Unicode support, enhanced utilities, and many
more advantages.
This IBM Redbook introduces the many enhancements made available with DB2 V8.
It will help you understand the functions offered by DB2 V8, and provides
information to help you to evaluate their applicability to your environment, as
well as to plan for the installation of DB2 V8 or the migration from DB2 V7.
