Roles
Professional Certification Program from IBM role names emphasize a level of competency or skill. The role names are qualified by the specific product or skill area being certified. Together the two components are recognized as a certification role.

Three levels of certification are offered by the Professional Certification Program from IBM, each characterized by a different level of competency. (Note: not every certification category, such as Data Management or e-business, will have certifications roles at all levels --- only at the levels that are appropriate.) Within each level, more than one role name may be possible, depending on the discipline being certified. For example, the roles "Solutions Expert" and "Solution Developer" are both options within Level 2. See the table below for the list of possible IBM certification role names.

Certifications for IBM software are in transition to a new role title and level structure in the first half of 2003. For more information, see the announcement, and details of the new role structure.

Level 1 Certifies the candidate:
  • IBM Certified Specialist

  • - or -
  • IBM eserver logo Certified Specialist
Performs basic operational services such as basic planning, configuration, installation, support, management, and maintenance, with limited assistance
- or -
Performs administration of a product, with limited assistance.
  • IBM Certified Developer
Has working product and environment knowledge and can code to design.
Level 2 Certifies the candidate:
  • IBM Certified Solutions/ Systems Expert
    - or -
  • IBM eserver logo Certified Solutions/ Systems Expert
Demonstrates breadth of basic operational services skills in more than one environment
- or -
Demonstrates depth of advanced operational services skills such as customizing, integrating, migrating and tuning, in one environment.
  • IBM Certified Solution Developer
Demonstrates the capability to plan and design an application requirement and build a prototype.
  • IBM Certified for e-business
Demonstrates a broad working knowledge of the IBM Application Framework for e-business, and the ability to apply it's methodologies, best practices and use of open standards to sell, advise, design and/or consult on e-business solutions.
Level 3 Certifies the candidate:
  • IBM Certified Advanced Technical Expert
Demonstrates multiple skills, such as expert advice and leadership in understanding and use of IBM solutions without assistance, and with references

Has demonstrable skill, or experience on the job<
- or -
Demonstrates depth and breadth of advanced operational services skills in more than one environment.
  • IBM Certified Enterprise Developer
This developer works with business analysts, application architects, application assemblers, and administrators to develop distributed enterprise software components that model an organization's practices, processes, and concepts. This developer understands application assembly of specific enterprise software components within the business domain across a multi-tier architecture, and has the system administration skills required to tune the application to meet performance requirements.

Again, a certification role consists of one of the standard role names shown above, qualified by the product name or skill area to which the certification applies.

  • IBM Certified Systems Expert - Administration for IBM WebSphere Application Server, Advanced Edition, V4.0

  • IBM Certified Advanced Technical Expert - RS/6000 AIX V4
  • IBM Certified Systems Expert - pSeries HACMP for AIX
  • IBM Certified for e-business - Solution Designer
