The IBM Certified Systems Expert - System i Technical Design and Implementation (including i5/OS V5R4) has two to three years (or more) of System i functional experience. This experience includes two job roles: - Analyzing customer business and technical requirements and needs, designing System i solutions, and planning the implementation of the solution.
- Installing, integrating, implementing, and supporting multiple generations of System i-based solutions.
The target audience for this certification is technical personnel: System i Business Partners, IBM System i personnel such as FTSS and ATS, and Customers.

Recommended experience: - Has two to three years (or more) of System i functional experience (must be able to work with current hardware and software).
- Technical experience includes designing, installing, integrating, implementing, and supporting multiple generations of System i-based solutions. (For example, experience consisting of taking a college course on System i would not be sufficient.)
- Has performed System i design for at least one year. This experience includes participating in at least 10 to 20 design opportunities, including working with other Designers in those design opportunities.
- Has performed installations or upgrades for at least 18 months.
- Supports the i5/OS operating system as well as including Microsoft Windows, AIX, and Linux.
- Has functional experience with POWER5, V5R4, and at least two preceding major releases of the System i operating system.
Recommended knowledge: - Has substantial understanding of Total-cost-of-ownership considerations for the customer and the System i product portfolio, including the current release and hardware, and previous releases and generations.
- Has substantial understanding of customer business requirements and how System i solutions can meet those requirements.
- Has general familiarity with the IBM System i System Handbook and System Builder (V5R4 and two previous versions).
- Understands System i and i5/OS V5R4 from a general sales and implementation perspective.
- Has practical applied knowledge to understand implications behind certain key technical areas such as LPAR.
- Has practical applied understanding of the basic concepts behind the various interfaces for System i: for example, iSeries Navigator, HMC, Command Language.
- Understands new system solutions as well as migration and supported upgrade paths.
- Understands basic iSCSI concepts.
- Understands LPAR implementation.
