NS Solutions and IBM to Collaborate on Autonomic Computing Standardization Effort
TOKYO - (January 9, 2004) - NS Solutions Corporation and IBM today announced a collaborative effort towards promoting standards-based autonomic computing technologies, based on IBM's autonomic computing blueprint, first made available in April 2003.
Realizing autonomic computing in heterogeneous environments requires that IT vendors apply standardized methods at the design and development stages of their products and solutions. The first step in the collaboration will involve validation tests of the Log & Trace tool for problem determination, an important tool for helping realize the autonomic infrastructure and is part of a software tool suite based on the blueprint. The tests will run for three months beginning in January 2004, and will take place at the Systems Research & Development Center of NS Solutions.
Currently, log data on applications, middleware and hardware differs from vendor to vendor, requiring significant time and effort for system diagnosis and analysis in a heterogeneous computing environment. Use of this tool allows data format conversions to the common base event format and correlation analysis, thus speeding up diagnoses and analysis; problem-identification and recovery to be done more quickly when system faults occur. This collaboration will be one of the first steps to realizing self-healing, and will accelerate the automation of problem determination in heterogeneous IT environments.
The verification tests will involve various platforms, including IBM's UNIX Server, IBM eServer pSeries, Sun Microsystems' server, and IBM's IA server, IBM eServer xSeries, running various combinations of software including IBM and Oracle's application server software and database software, with technical support from IBM's Makuhari Design Center in Japan.
NS Solutions will determine how effective the log & trace tool is for system diagnosis and analysis in heterogeneous computing environment, while providing feedback to IBM Japan on the test results, with an eye toward applying to actual systems. The company is also considering the utilization of the tool, when the time arrives for the application of an actual log and trace tool system, as a standardized autonomic computing technology for its IT infrastructure business, and for various services operated within its own data center.
