Hitachi Software Applies Autonomic Computing Technology to jRetail@Solution for Distribution Industries

Tokyo, Japan - (February 3, 2004) - Hitachi Software Engineering Co., Ltd. today announced plans to verify autonomic computing technology on its jRetail@Solution for distribution industries and other solutions, and then market autonomic computing feature-embedded software packages.

Autonomic computing is a comprehensive initiative for making information systems self-managing, minimizing human intervention in order to respond to the increasing complexity of IT. In the verification process, Hitachi Software is collaborating with IBM, and is utilizing autonomic computing software tools provided by IBM.

The first phase began on December 2003 and involves verification of autonomic computing applied to the Assam Commerce Server Core (based on WebSphere and DB2), which is the core package of the jRetail@Solution for distribution industries, and the Assam anyWarp Web application development environment. Technical support for the verification work is being done by the IBM's Makuhari Design Center in Japan. Following verification, Hitachi Software plans to begin marketing Assam anyWarp with actual autonomic computing features in July 2004, and new versions of jRetail@Solution with Assam Commerce Server Core in October 2004. Hitachi Software is also studying application of autonomic computing technology to solutions where support for multivendor environments is needed, including other platforms, operations management solutions, and system integration business applications.

IBM Japan, together with Hitachi Software and other companies, is advancing standardization based on IBM's autonomic computing blueprint, first made available in April 2003, which assists the building of autonomic computing systems. Autonomic computing environments increase overall system performance, while enabling significant improvements in systems management efficiency, by linking many different technologies.

Achieving autonomic computing in heterogeneous environment will require IBM and other vendors to establish a common, standardized approach for autonomic computing systems design.

In order to verify the technology on their software and solution packages, Hitachi Software is adopting Common Base Event format, which IBM submitted to the OASIS Standards Body last year, and is utilizing Log & Trace Tool, a problem determination tool that is part of the suite of autonomic computing software tools provided by IBM. Problem determination tools standardize the format, content, and layout of log and trace data gathered in autonomic computing environments, allowing prompt, appropriate problem determination in case of a fault.
