Autonomic computing and Enigmatec

Enigmatec Corporation, a privately-held software company with offices in New York, London, and Palo Alto, provides strategic management software for the next generation of self-managing data centers. With Enigmatec's policy-based Execution Management System (EMS™) acting as the automation layer between the business objectives that drive an enterprise and the IT resources required to execute them, businesses can dramatically lower operating costs and reduce business downtime. EMS automates repetitive, mundane, or manual tasks by sensing changes in the behavior of IT resources, and automatically executing policies to bring system performance back in line with Service Level Agreements. EMS automates IT policies and procedures--at any level--from shutting down a single server gracefully, to deploying multiple Web servers in response to an increase in usage, to moving an entire suite of applications to a disaster recovery site. Mission-critical processes, such as those for workload management and disaster recovery, are no longer contained in a combination of run-books, manuals, scripts, and administrator’s heads. They are codified as powerful, flexible workflows and can be tested, maintained, and deployed, all from our intuitive, graphical user interface. At run-time, our distributed EMS agents operate autonomically: self-managing and self-healing. Our architecture is based on leading university research, is highly scalable, has no single point of failure, and is being stress-tested at some of the largest firms on Wall Street.

Enigmatec is demonstrating the benefits of autonomic computing today . We compliment IBM software such as Tivoli® and WebSphere®, by providing automated execution of complex, multi-system policies in response to system events. We also continue to enhance our integration with the IBM Autonomic Computing Toolkit via planned support for the Common Event Infrastructure, Common Base Event specification, and the Integrated Solutions Console.

“Our Execution Management System allows our customers to move to truly self-managing and self-healing environments by automating their most complex IT operations. Our solution was developed from the ground up to enable autonomic behavior, and our technology follows the IBM Autonomic Computing blueprint. EMS enables “lights out” data center operations, in which intelligent agents sense problems, repair them automatically, and allocate resources where they are needed. We are excited to work with IBM as we integrate EMS with Tivoli and Websphere products. In addition, our planned support for key components of the IBM Autonomic Computing core technologies, such as the Common Base Event and the Integrated Solutions Console, will allow Enigmatec and IBM to develop increasingly powerful solutions for our mutual customers.”

Enigmatec solutions
EMS allows enterprises to automate any IT procedure, from failure recovery to workload management. These procedures are often scattered throughout the data center in run-books, manuals, scripts, or operators’ heads. EMS automates these by integrating measurement data from disparate monitoring tools and applications, and automating the execution of responses to changes in the environment. EMS also measures these responses against Service Level Agreements, such as total time to full recovery or acceptable levels of system response time. Our fully distributed platform, designed for scalability and performance, has no single point of failure.

Clients use EMS for:

  • Automated failure management. EMS provides rapid detection of failure of any component in the IT environment and automatic execution of remedial action;
  • Orchestrated disaster recovery. For failures that affect entire systems or multiple applications, EMS’s support for complex policies allows organizations to automate the many steps required to ensure smooth failover to a recovery site
  • Automated workload management. By integrating load measurements at man levels, from CPU utilization to application response time, EMS can initiate the deployment of additional resources “just-in-time” and reallocate those resources once the load peak has passed.

EMS includes:

  • EMS Designer™: our visual design studio for capturing, editing, and testing Policies. Combines the best of workflow and business process modeling tools in an easy-to-use drag-and-drop interface.
  • EMS Operations™: a web-based Policy monitor. Intuitive display of SLA adherence with drill-down to the performance of any set of services (such as a cluster of database servers) or an individual policy (such as the failure of a particular server blade).
  • EMS Platform™: powerful peer-to-peer architecture that provides the communication between agents, enabling each element to act autonomically.
