Autonomic computing and Appfluent Technology

Appfluent Technology develops innovative information management software to enable large enterprises to reduce costs and realize measurable business value in deploying and managing business intelligence, data warehouse and enterprise applications.

Appfluent’s software delivers measurable business value by enabling analytics and automation to understand the data usage patterns of enterprise, reporting, business intelligence and data warehouse applications.

By gaining insight into how applications interact with data in an IBM information management environment, organizations can:

  • Reduce operational costs - via data, server and storage consolidation
  • Increase utilization of existing systems - by reducing physical data footprint, recovering storage space and optimizing data design/architecture
  • Improve performance and efficiency – by analyzing usage patterns to pin point sources of bottlenecks (i.e. end-users, applications or database), tune applications and databases and optimize end-user training
  • Monitor regulatory and security compliance – by generating audit reports on who is accessing what data

“We share IBM’s vision of creating intelligent, open systems to help organizations reduce operating costs and provide increased returns on their IT investments. Through IBM’s Autonomic Computing initiative we are working together to deliver on this vision.”
- Frank Gelbart, CEO, Appfluent Technology

Self-managing technologies: Self-optimizing, Self-protecting
Appfluent Technology solution: Appfluent Query Auditor

Appfluent Technology solution

The Appfluent Query Auditor is the first non-invasive, zero-latency solution for auditing and monitoring data and application usage. Query Auditor helps companies gain deep insight into data usage--typically in a matter of hours--by automating the process of auditing and analyzing data usage patterns for all users, application queries and data across distributed databases. These databases can include OLTP systems, operational data stores, legacy databases, data marts and data warehouses. Key capabilities and benefits of Query Auditor include:

Data Consolidation

  • Catalog metadata information on all data stores and monitor modifications and changes over time
  • Provide usage summary on users, applications and data--down to the column levels
  • Identify unused or dormant tables, columns and views
  • Enable detailed query usage analysis--includes relationships across individual SQL clauses, functions, aggregates, indexes, tables, columns and more

Resource Utilization

  • Identify unused tables, columns, views and indexes on infrequently used columns
  • Assess usage of data extracted and loaded from other data sources
  • Enable optimization of ETL processes to reduce data foot-print
  • Report on usage activity by applications, users and host-ids
  • Analyze user/data dependencies

Application Performance

  • Pinpoint performance bottlenecks (i.e. user errors, application and/or database)
  • Speed up problem resolution and improve service levels and response times
  • Standardize on fewer applications; Eliminate 'rogue' applications
  • Improve query performance; Deliver data faster and more efficiently
  • Tune application and databases to match usage patterns
  • Reduce application testing and deployment costs

Automated Usage Audits

  • Audit usage of data down to the column level in a database
  • Generate usage audit reports based on specific user, application or table/column of data
  • Detect and notify audit breaches and unauthorized access via 'rogue' applications
