The challenge: Create an accessible, usable, open user interface.
The solution: Redesigned Web site to meet W3C WAI WCAG - AA guidelines. IBM accessibility technologies -- Home Page Reader (HPR) and IBM Easy Web Browsing in use on site at no additional charge. Working with the Human Ability and Accessibility Center, BCS implemented Linux and deployed a custom content management system based on Java TM J2E
The benefit:
- Provides well-designed Web site that is accessible by more people and meets W3C standards
- Provides a content management system that makes it easier to populate the Web site
- Moves client from proprietary system to open, more cost-effective system
- Provides technology that helps users who are blind or have low vision more easily access Web content
Italian Senate launches accessible Web sites
The EMEA Human Ability and Accessibility Center, working hand in hand with the IGS BCS team, successfully completed a redesign and launch of the Italian Senate Web sites. The team delivered the solution on the Linux operating system employing Java TM J2E for the custom content management solution, to create accessible, usable sites based on open standards. Previously, the Italian government had a complex environment that was rather difficult to maintain online. The project incorporated the specifications of the - resulting in sites that are accessible to people with a wide range of needs.
In collaboration with IBM, the Italian Senate is offering the use IBM Easy Web Browsing on their Web site for free to make accessing their content easier for senior citizens and people with disabilities.
